Need Help with Food? A Single Mom Solution for Assistance with Food

Help with food is available for single moms who are struggling to make ends meet.  While America is knownhelp with food for being the land of plenty, it is often surprising that so many adults and children go without the nutrition that they need.  For many, help with food is harder to access than you might think.

Did you know that millions of hard-working American citizens struggle with hunger on a daily basis?  Many of those that need help with food are single mothers.  Unable to get their children a good nutritional diet, many single moms worry about sending their kids to school with an empty tummy.  Most people are unaware that up to 16% of children do not have the security of regular, daily nutrition.  Being unable to get help with food can lead to numerous physical and mental illnesses along with poor performance in school.

Impact on Mental Health

Going without a balanced diet can lead to mental health problems including depression, anxiety and general sadness.  Physical implications include weakness, irregular brain functioning and nutritional deficiencies. Behavioral problems also rise when children and adults are unable to get help with food.

Impact on Child Development

Stunted growth and overall poor health can be attributed to a lack of help with food.  Children may experience stunted growth during the most important developmental years of their lives.  The impact of lack of proper nutrition does not escape children during pregnancy.  Indications may include low birth weight along with developmental and learning difficulties in the first few years of life.  Help with food is needed to combat attendance problems as well as attention deficits in the classroom.

Getting Help with Food

help with foodMany organizations across the country have banded together to form a network to provide help with food for single moms and anyone else who may be in need.  One such national organization is Feeding America.org.  This national organization has a multitude of programs to get anyone struggling to get the help with food that they need.  From public assistance programs to child hunger programs to network programs, Feeding America.org has provided meals to thousands who are in need.

Another organization which also provides public assistance to those who need help with food, is the United States Department of Agriculture.  Their Child and Adult Care Food Program focuses on improving access to support and improving health and wellness.   CACFP provides food to more than 3 million families in need every year. Through providing grants to state agencies, the CACF Program plays a pivotal role in reducing hunger by giving many people consistent help with food.

The USDA also provides assistance to millions of households through the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program or SNAP.  Eligible households must meet income and resources guidelines to receive benefits.  There are also special rules and assistance for the elderly and/or disabled to apply.  If you need help with food, please contact your appropriate state.
